LegareJ'ai fini par me décider à lire ce pavé de 834 pages à cause de toutes les bonnes critiques que j'avais lues ici ou là et pas du tout à cause de ma première expérience de cette auteure. En effet, La Répétition est un roman dans lequel je n'ai pas pu rentrer et qui m'a laissée déconcertée et parfaitement indifférente.Les Luminaires est totalement différent, par sa construction ingénieuse, il tient à la fois d'un puzzle, d'un emboitement de poupées russes infini et d'un labyrinthe. C'est un roman qui se situe à la fin du 19ème siècle à Hokitika, dans une petite ville du sud de la Nouvelle Zélande, au moment de la ruée vers l'or. Au début du roman douze hommes se sont réunis dans le plus grand secret dans le salon d'un hôtel de la ville. Ils sont tous mêlés de près ou de loin à la disparition d'une fabuleuse fortune en or et peut-être bien d'un meurtre. Tous sont inquiets et se déclarent prêts à partager tout ce qu'ils savent de cette affaire. En apparence, c'est ce qu'ils font et nous partageons récit après récit. Ainsi, les grandes lignes de l'affaire commencent à apparaître, mais seulement à apparaître. La vérité ne sera dévoilée que très lentement, après mains tours et détours suivant la position des planètes. En effet chaque partie du récit est configurée en fonction de la position des planètes au moment où se produisent les évènements.Ce roman n'est pas ce que j'appellerais un chef-d'aeuvre, mais c'est certainement un récit impeccablement mené sur plus de huit cent pages dans une langue du 19ème parfaite. L'ennui ne m'a jamais envahi, ce qui est déjà bien pour un livre aussi long. Ceci est probablement dû à cette construction si particulière et aussi à la complexité de quelques uns des personnages. Un bon et long moment de lecture.
